Is a photo the only version of your menu?

Check readability and keep an up-to-date text menu on your site.

MACD JournalUpdated 28 / 09 / 26

Plenty of cafés and takeaways post their menu as a photo: a picture of the board, or a nicely designed image on Instagram. It looks good.

A photo of a menu is hard to read on a small phone, can't be searched, can't be read aloud by a screen reader, and Google has a harder time understanding it. When the menu changes, the old photo keeps circulating.

Who this is for

Cafés, restaurants, takeaways, food trucks and bakeries.

Check it this week

  1. Search Google for your café's name plus "menu". What comes up? Is it current?
  2. Open your menu on your phone. Can you read the prices without zooming?
  3. If you mention allergens, are they on the menu itself or only on a sign in the shop?

An example

Imagine, for example, someone standing outside at lunchtime, deciding between you and the place next door. They search your name, get a blurry photo of last season's board, and can't tell if you still do the soup. The place next door has a menu page they can read in five seconds.

What usually fixes it

A simple menu page on your website in real text: sections, dishes, prices if you want to show them, and allergen information. It's easy to update when something changes, readable at any size, and you can link to it from Instagram, Google and WhatsApp.

Keep the nice photo for Instagram. Just don't make it the only place the menu lives.
