Accessibility · Note 05
Can more customers complete a booking or order on your site?
Four checks on a phone to spot possible barriers.
"Website accessibility" can sound like a box for big companies to tick. For a small business it's simpler: can your customers read your page, tap your buttons and finish booking or ordering?
In Ireland's 2022 Census, 22% of people reported at least one long-lasting condition or difficulty to any extent (CSO, Census 2022). Add the customer squinting at a phone on a sunny street, the one who has turned the text size right up, or the one using a phone one-handed on the bus.
Who this is for
Every business with a website, especially one where people book or buy.
Check it this week (15 minutes, on your phone)
- Set your phone's text size to the largest setting and open your site. Does anything overlap or disappear?
- Try to book or order using only your thumb. Are the buttons big enough and far enough apart?
- Find any light grey text on a white background. Can you read it outdoors?
- Is anything important only inside an image, like a price list or menu? Screen readers can't read the text in an image unless it has a written description.
This 15-minute check does not certify accessibility; it is a quick way to spot possible barriers.
What usually fixes it
Larger, higher-contrast text. Real text instead of pictures of text. Buttons that say what they do ("Book a table", not "Click here"). Forms that tell you what's missing when something goes wrong.
Most of these fixes make the site clearer and easier for everyone. That's why we build accessibility in from the start instead of adding it at the end.
